How Poor are the Poor in Rome? – Pope Francis

This is about a news story ten days old that I just ran into. The pope is on his way to some parish in Rome. He sees a shanty town and tells his driver to pull over and visits.

A good story for a pope dedicated to the poor like Francis of Assisi, his namesake.

While it is a good old fashioned human interest news story - The pope’s camera is rolling for Vatican propaganda. And the poor living in this shanty town all seem to have cell/mobile phones to snap photos of the visiting pope, no doubt e-mailing back to South America in the Andes where most of these shanty town crowd seem to hail from.

It is cynical of me to question – how poor are the poor if the poor can afford cell phones?

Or are we, am I just not being 21^st century and should accept cell phones as now part of the human species package?

After the release of the beheading video Sunday night, the tiny Christian-majority home village of more than half of the 21 Egyptians believed killed by the extremists was gutted by grief. Inside the village church, relatives wept and shouted the names of the dead in shock.

"What will be a relief to me is to take a hold of his murderer, tear him apart, eat up his flesh and liver," said Bushra Fawzi in el-Aour village, as he wept over the loss of his 22-year-old son Shenouda. "I want his body back. If they dumped it in the sea, I want it back. If they set fire to it, I want its dust."

The 21 — mainly young men from impoverished families — had travelled to Libya for work and were kidnapped in two groups in December and January from the coastal city of Sirte. In the video, the group is marched onto what is purported to be a Libyan beach before masked militants with knives carve off the head of each. The killing of at least a dozen of them is clearly visible, though it was not clear from the video whether all 21 hostages were killed.

Republicans to Cut Social Security Benefits by 19% in 2016 – First Cut With Disability Payments

You lower the benefits to the disabled; you make them homeless or starve. Then again some with 19% cut benefits will then qualify for Medicaid supplemental and Food Stamps.

Could cost more - this phony accounting trip to eventually rob the whole Social Security Trust Fund.

On the very first day of the new Congress, House Republicans passed a rule, later adopted by the full House, which would prevent the common practice of rebalancing funds. What this does is lay the groundwork for a 19% cut in disability benefits.

That’s a horribly devastating cut for individuals – most of whom are in their 50’s and in poor health – to absorb beginning next year. In fact, since most disability recipients receive barely $1,200 a month, a cut of nearly 20 percent could mean the difference between affording food, medicine, clothing or paying bills. It is an unspeakable option and one that we are determined to
prevent.

Earlier this month, President Obama suggested a budget that would do exactly what has been done 11 times in the past and that is to rebalance funds between the two programs. The response by the House to block that is merely an attempt to manufacture a crisis where none exists.

CHAPEL HILL — The father of two of three students shot to death in Chapel Hill on Tuesday says the shooting was a “hate crime” based on the Muslim identity of the victims.

Chapel Hill police said Wednesday morning that a dispute about parking in the neighborhood of rented condominiums near Meadowmont may have led Craig Stephen Hicks to shoot his neighbors, Deah Shaddy Barakat, 23, and his wife Yusor Mohammad Abu-Salha, 21, and Abu-Salha’s sister, Razan Mohammad Abu-Salha, 19, of Raleigh.

But the women’s father, Dr. Mohammad Abu-Salha, who has a psychiatry practice in Clayton, said regardless of the precise trigger Tuesday night, Hicks’ underlying animosity toward Barakat and Abu-Salha was based on their religion and culture. Abu-Salha said police told him Hicks shot the three inside their apartment.

“It was execution style, a bullet in every head,” Abu-Salha said Wednesday morning. “This was not a dispute over a parking space; this was a hate crime. This man had picked on my daughter and her husband a couple of times before, and he talked with them with his gun in his belt. And they were uncomfortable with him, but they did not know he would go this far.”

Abu-Salha said his daughter who lived next door to Hicks wore a Muslim head scarf and told her family a week ago that she had “a hateful neighbor.”

“Honest to God, she said, ‘He hates us for what we are and how we look,’” he said.

Karen Hicks, the wife of Craig Hicks, said Wednesday afternoon that she does not think religious bigotry was behind her husband’s actions.

“I can say that it is my absolute belief that this incident had nothing to do with religion or the victim’s faith, but in fact was related to long-standing parking disputes my husband had with various neighbords regardless of their race, religion or creed,” Karen Hicks said in a statement.

Ripley Rand, the U.S. prosecutor for the Middle District, which includes Chapel Hill and Durham, said federal authorities had not launched their own investigation of the crime. Rand said that from the early details of the Chapel Hill investigation, the killings Tuesday did not appear to be part of a targeted campaign against Muslims.

Tom Brokaw Calling the Kettle (Brian Williams) Black

I don’t know how and when all this fuss over Brian Williams got started. Who is behind his downfall. He did keep embellishing his war hero story with each telling. I see that he used to be WCAU-TV Jersey reporter in his past btw. This recent FOX NEWS story about his being robbed selling Christmas Trees for charity as a teenager is FOX digging up all dirt and reinforcing the anarchist views of the right that all “Liberal” media is a lie, like Fox News is even considered news etc.

I am impressed that Brian got this far on his good looks. Only 18 college credits between community college and two major universities before being an intern in the “Carter” admin – a major sin for the right. I do not think that a college degree is good for anything anymore.

Williams is just a $200,000 a week talking head on the nightly news. He is what he is. Not much.

I see that Tom Brokaw, his predecessor, is rumored to have stated that Williams should be fired, said it to his cronies at NBC.

But speaking about talking heads, delusional fantasies, and the truth, I lost all respect for Brokaw after one of Ronald Reagan’s Press Conferences, where I expected an intelligent comment from Brokaw after the conference that did not happen on the news wrap up of that event. During the News Conference in the 1980s, one of the reporters asked Saint Ronny what could the average American due to protect themselves from the HIV virus.

RR answered with a solution of drawing and freezing a supply of one’s own blood so as to not be contaminated then with HIV tainted blood in the marketplace. While it was a solution for rich people who could afford such a luxury solution, I failed to see how it answered the question about what the “average” citizen could do to protect themselves. No comment or complaint from Tom Brokaw on that delusional comment by RR.

Not commenting on the news, just reporting it, is in many ways just a rubber stamp on the words printed out by your Public Relations spin doctor.

I have seen this recently on the Internet and wonder if the meme is true as reported. That KFC is test marketing a “Double Down Dog” in the Philippines of a hot dog wrapped in a fried chicken bun and covered with cheese. That the test marketing area sells out every day this test market food.

That there is so many things wrong with this on many levels to me in that hot dogs are mixed with fried chicken and covered (blessed?) with the American idea of cheese over everything. 

To a person like myself that must watch his diet for the sake of health, the youth that this fast food is targeted at is doing nothing but eating heart bombs in terms of future health issues – a Russian Roulette of sorts in dietary practices.

But then again in terms of curiosity and the sometimes lure of fun in gluttony, I would not mind test tasting this curious new food object.

So it goes.

Saint-Gaudens Diana – Cultural Rape and Banking Sponsored Commodity Art At The Philadelphia Museum of Art

In line with the new Global Corporate Spreadsheet, formerly the Wharton Global Spreadsheet (local-USA), and the emerging global culture thing ongoing, I was taken aback when I learned that Bank of America came in and gilded the Statue of Diana at the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

I called this “cultural rape” in comments on a the history blog below mainly because Diana in her salvaged state is the image I saw all my life from childhood onward and therefore it was imprinted on me as “questionable art” if not “decorative art” considering its varied history and usage in the past 125 years since its creation and or variation, adaption of creation by the famous gilded age sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens as a decorative weather vane on the second Madison Square Garden 1890-1925.

After some months, I stand by my decision that this is cultural rape by a commercial bank in a global cultural sense on the art museum in Philly - it is still an abomination. Piss on the commodity vision of art by capitalism.

...Been following the story of the Philly Diana for decades, being a native of Philly now living in Gotham for close to forty years. Ran into your original article recently about the – about to re-gild story while amateur researching some other forgotten items, lost architectural NYC treasures of that so-called gilded age.

Now in catching up on some modern things such as this recent unveiling of Diana Regilt at the PMA, the thought occurs to me that this is somehow cultural rape of a native Philly Icon. Coming from an old geezer, nobody will care what I think of all this. Considering that Philly bought her as scrap and for the price of scrap at thirty eight dollars, the true re-gilding I would think is in the revisionist art history of her.

I suppose it is only a matter of time before some other philanthropic or publicity starved banking interest puts arms back on the Venus de Milo in the Louvre and why not throw in a nose ring and tattoos while they are at it.

...She was art to me as a little boy over half a century ago with her mere green patina. My POV is that yes she had gilt on the top of MSGII but she was a mere replica of the original bronze piece on top of the too big and too heavy to be a weather vane statue that McKim Meade and White moved to their Agriculture Building at the Columbian Exposition and later lost in the fire of July 1894. The Philly Diana was art as she was salvaged and placed in her niche in the PMA just like the Venus de Milo in the Louvre.

Outsiders with money have now decided she wasn’t art unless gilt. Art and beauty are truly in the eyes of the beholder. Now she is too loud in her once quiet niche. “Look at Me!” Maybe a coat of Neon Green Paint to jazz up the natural stones of the PMA main staircase is needed as well.
