Knights of Columbus and their Underwriting the Age of the Rockstar Papacies of John Paul II and Benedict XVI

I caught a glimpse of a video sound bite of a very tired, very old Benedict XVI doing his last Mass at Saint Peter’s Basilica on Ash Wednesday. 

His planned retirement for after his last birthday at 85 last April was delayed to tie up the loose ends of the brewing Vatileaks scandal which is still going on, on the back burner in that the Banking scandal is still being handled mostly behind closed doors amongst European Banks and European Bank Regulators. 

No doubt it is good to have a vicious political back street fighter like Carl Anderson of the Knight of Columbus on board, literally on the Board of the Vatican Bank, to exert the last influence of the bankrupt American Political Empire to save what is left of the ambitious shards of the glory days of John Paul II, the Cold War and that Rockstar Papacy of JPII.

I started this article wanting to exercise my memory of Paul VI’s first 14 hour visit to the New World, to New York City on October 4, 1965. I wanted to confirm the itinerary of that day before making a memory thing in writing that might in fact contradict the facts.

I was going to go into more detail about the Mass at Yankee Stadium with an audience of 90,000 live for a papal mass and a TV audience of the tens of millions because the liberal (Jewish) east coast media was only three TV networks back then, no hundreds of channels on cable for you youngsters to comprehend the stone age in television land.

No doubt on that date, many Protestants and fundamentalists turned their forced view of a Roman ceremony off the TV and sat around the parlor and or on the porch as I can remember when I was a child and the Political Conventions every four years wasted a weeks worth of summertime TV viewing pleasure on politics. 

It was the convention or the porch or playing outside in the dark off the porch to entertain oneselves in those days.

And since I am on memories and tangents, I can remember waiting in the rain, having taken a day off from work in full time work, full time college schedule up at Columbia to study for midterms, waiting for the Rockstar John Paul II to cruise by on his way to Madison Square Garden to some youth rally that I waited there in the rain only to not see John Paul II with his torso through the roof of a limo in a clear raincoat waving to the crowd but just as he approached my spot on the sidewalk, he did a full ninety degree turn and waved to the folks on the opposite side of the street and my only view was his back side so to speak. 

So much for a wasted investment of my infatuation with the media rock star from Rome.

Well anyway, trying to nail down the hour by hour itinerary of Paul VI in 1965, I came across some interesting financial flows and as it turns out remote causes of JPII’s super stardom and Benedict’s imitation of such in his royal progresses since.

As you may remember the Beatles did a Concert in Shea Stadium in August 1965. They got 55,000 in attendance, no doubt a world record for the entertainment business but the Beatles were groundbreakers in so many ways in terms of the new global dismensions of entertainment and raking in literally tons of cash profits from a business that even Elvis could not have dreamed of a decade earlier.

I was looking for the hour by hour itinerary of Paul VI in NYC which I still have not found. Oh, I know he went here and there but I only found LBJ’s Official White House Diary to see when Paul VI make it to the Waldorf Astoria with a private meeting with LBJ and other senior members of Congress in the plush rooms along the plush hallways of that icon of American Luxury hoteliers.

Then the thought occurred to me why do Yankee Stadium and not Shea Stadium which is near JFK airport and a more convenient spot for a pontiff that does not even want to sleep in the New World though he deigned to briefly visit it once. Papal Jet might turn back into a pumpkin at midnight? LOL. That or sleep in Franny's Pink Bishop's Palace. ;~) 

BTW Paul VI, besides the LBJ meeting, he got to visit St. Patrick’s Cathedral, make a speech at the United Nations - "war no more, no more war..." and checked on the royal property of Michelangelo’s Pieta Statue on loan to the Papal Exhibit at the extended by one year 1964 World’s Fair which I did not get to see. Another story sometime on that.

So now you have Yankee Stadium in this brave new world of Rock and Roll entertainment squeezing 90,000 into a stadium with an official capacity of 57,000 odd, same as Shea Stadium’s same official 57,000 odd capacity.

Further research put me into reviewing the visuals and my conclusions were that the Beatles in Shea only sold tickets for the official stadium seats.  John, Paul, George and Ringo performed on the grass of the baseball infield.

Yankee Stadium on the other hand had something like 33,000 extra seats on the grass around the papal Mass Platform, a platform no doubt not unlike a boxing ring in other stadium, arena settings. 

I can only imagine that every folding chair from every school hall of every Catholic Parish in the city had contributed those folding chairs and make sure you stencil your school’s name on the seats if you want them returned etc.

So you have this evolution in less than two months of super rock stardom entertainment jumping from 55,000 seats at Shea to 90,000 at Yankee Stadium.

Then the thought occurred to me that the Beatles’s concert was no doubt limited in seating of screaming teenage girls behind barriers and also in consideration of liability insurance of such a unique strange event on the American Landscape.

Then I have to wonder why Yankee stadium and not Shea Stadium as the staging area for Paul VI’s very crowded papal staging of the Roman Mass.

Then I found out why or at least found a path of least resistance in logic to find out that the Knights of Columbus owned the land on which Yankee Stadium Stood. 

Then from there is the logical leap of who would be crazy enough to underwrite such a probably very expensive Insurance Policy on an event that probable needed a total waver of most city safety codes in existence at the time. Who else, the Knight of Columbus.

When Pope Paul VI delivered his homily at Yankee Stadium in 1965, he was actually speaking on ground owned by the Knights of Columbus. At the time, the Order served as the Yankees’ landlords. In 1953, some 30 years after the stadium opened, the Knights bought the nine acres on which Yankee Stadium was built. The decision grew out of Father McGivney’s vision — not as a lifelong baseball fan, but as the founder of a fraternal order to help provide for members’ families. 

To continue fulfilling that vision in the mid-20th century, the Order began purchasing the properties of some large corporations and “leasing the properties back to the original owners at a rental that will give the Order an adequate interest return for the money invested,” wrote then-Supreme Knight Luke E. Hart in a letter to members. “We gave them a 100-year lease for the ground at what turned out to be a reasonable, low rent,” explained Dechant. 

But in the early 1970s, when representatives of the City of New York decided to renovate the stadium, they also wanted to own the land under it. “It was not our wish to sell it, but we had no choice,” Dechant said. “We were proud to own it.”

That the capacity to make big media statements and big media like events involving the Pope as modern Rockstar in a modern age, you need sponsors as in the form of an insurance company like the Knights of Columbus to underwrite worldwide the big stadium entertainment events that helps you push and sell the product, whatever that happens to be. Etc.

That media stardom changes the scope of centuries old tradition and the mere fact of global fame gives so many the illusion and or false perception that the star on stage is a good or honorable person. Anybody ever hear of Papal Knight Jimmy Savile? Whatever. 

I had also done some research in the recent past to find out that 90,000 in Yankee Stadium for a Mass was not a record.

I think the record might have been set in 1926 with something like 200,000 at a mass in the newly built for the Sesquicentennial Municipal Stadium in Philadelphia.

Paolo Gabriele and the Vatican Faux Trial

I have not rushed into print with my opinion about the so-called trial of the Bishop of Rome’s butler.

The whole thing from the start was a bit of I don’t know what to make of it.

It was no Stalin Show Trial.  It was a faux trial and we already knew the verdict.

Paolo is a dupe in a huge game of front office chicken politics between the unofficial Vatican Baseball teams of the Crows and the Doves. That’s American baseball BTW and not the Italian version. Whatever.

The Doves may or may not be what is left of what passes for moral forces left in the front office of the Roman Church founded in the fourth century by the emperor/god Constantine the Great aka saint Constantine.

The recent leaks coming out of the Vatican have been a source of great embarrassment to the ruling brass of the extremely old and extremely senile group of politburo members holding on for dear life for just one more crack at the papacy even if it is for a few months or a few years and not unlike the string of short term Soviet flunkies that wanted some reward at the end of meaningless lives as institutional players and or politicians.  

The end games of dead or dying institutions and or obsolete mission statement belief systems.

They had to make it look like they were on top of all the leaks to the press about corruption, cronyism, buggery and real leaking plumbing (faucets) all over the artificial Disneyland created by Mussolini in 1929 to put a fence around and hopefully an end to interference in Italian politics by the pimps, bankers and hangers-on that run the Vatican and have done so since day one around the year 325 C.E..

The crows and or the ravens, the dark party, the one in power that has no power and cannot manage anything. As an aside, the independent mob in the USA that feign allegiance as they close churches and sell off valuable real estate in places like New York, Philadelphia, Chicago, Los Angeles and San Francisco (follow the money btw), well they, that burkite wing of the Crows, are an entity unto themselves these days under the feeble Brezhnev like leadership of the current fading figurehead ratzo wing etc.

Anyway the leaks are as much of an embarrassment to the Crows as is the possibility of real whistle blowers that could put half the Vatican front office in jail should they be able to jump over the oxymoron of Italian justice and get an EU tribunal going on the money laundering alone with the cartels etc. thing.

The butler faux trial ended on a Saturday which tells me that it was unimportant news in the media cycle and they wanted to forget the whole thing.  

The opus dei people have been running around spying on everyone with the heat on so to speak now that they got the goods on a rather mediocre public servant who had been entrusted to keep his eyes on loose valuables hanging around the Bishop’s private apartment. Handing valuables or documents back over when asked for them, after and while his wife babysat them in his private home space. 

Too much house hoarding, and not in the Gabriele Household, as so much hoarding of blackmail documents and other juicy video goodies and audio tapes in the Secretary of State’s overcrowded private household space – OMG!

They, the opus dei plumbers, may have caulked or puttied the windows or the real leaking plumbing (faucets) and they are putting up air raid curtains to cut off all lights from view at night, but the truth is that the Holy Spirit blew town decades ago with John XXIII and Vatican II.  

Fighting over the last pieces of cheese in a post-apocalyptic Roman Church world is all the rats, ravens, crows or even doves have left to do once the H.S. flew the coop.

Which BTW resides not in a place or an institution anymore but in the Hearts of the true followers of Christ.

Catholic Fascism in America – 1933 – the Movies, Media and Mind (Crowd) Control

Reading some of the data below made me recollect that I never saw my father go to the movies.  Our mother took us to the movies on occasion but for the most part it was just us siblings that made the trek to the local art deco palace, the Midway Theater in Philly, on most Saturday afternoons.

In fact my father never had a kind word for Hollywood when the topic would arise and his non-praise of the industry often contained descriptives that were in fact anti-Semitic.

Having done some research, apparently there was a cultural divide whereby I think the impact of talking motion pictures in the late 1920s and early 1930s and the standard violence of gang mob movies of the era got combined in the minds of the consumer with movies about divorce and infidelity.

The Christian Right was a little behind on this curve back then and it was the Catholic Church at the point in trying to gain control over the “artistic” abilities of a new industry.  These days, many complaints about videos games, violence, sex and the product does not fit into any old standard niche. Which leaves some to protest and want to control Content.

The movie industry that was new was trying to sell a product and did not want control from the church crowd or even the FDR big government crowd.  Somewhere in all the cultural war over movies came the Catholic Legion of Decency out of Chicago. But it did not have any legs or arms until outsiders came into play and manipulated the scene to gain power over the present then situation.

Having grown up in Philly, I had heard about the mighty Cardinal Dougherty who apparently did not issue a mere appeal for a Movie Code but a full Catholic Fatwa in 1934 against the whole movie industry, forbidding all Catholics to totally boycott all cinema.  A fatwa that he never bothered to rescind.

Ironic that about this time in 1935, Dougherty bought his humble forty plus room palace on the Philadelphia Main Line with its nine acres of privacy that had a private movie theater for hisself and his cronies to watch Hollywood movies.  Hypocrite!

My father, the son of a church sexton, do doubt had the fear of God of being seen anywhere near a movie theater.  His father’s reputation and possible livelihood rode on the shoulders of a young teenager, a feeling I think that never left him. This looking over your shoulder is a feeling I think a lot of people in the present world, the recent and past world, speaks against the concept of freedom and for a government controlling the lives of its people in a fascist state. 
   

Hollywood picked up on the sexual laxity in the country and began making movies that depicted scenes that offended the Church. American Catholics were used to being told when to stand, sit and kneel, so when Cardinal Dennis Dougherty of Pennsylvania declared that Hollywood’s movies were entirely based on sex and violence and forbid all Catholics to attend movies on pain of serious sin. Catholics listened and movie attendance dropped dramatically. Catholics did what they were told. 

When the movie moguls threatened to close all movie theatres in Philadelphia and put 15,000 people out of work in the time of the depression, the Cardinal said–Good, close them! They didn’t! The ban remains in effect to this day. The League of Decency came into being as Catholics drifted back to the theatres to face the threat of placing one in a state of an occasion of sin. 

That the guiding force that gave the American Catholic Bishops the push to do the most and take on Hollywood was none other than the recently appointed Papal Nuncio Amleto Giovanni Cicognani.  Cicognani was appointed Nuncio to coincide with the new FDR administration by Pius XI, the pope who signed a treaty with Mussolini to settle territory disputes from 1870 and to create the bizarre political state of the Vatican.  Pius XI also gave away Catholic political rights in Germany to the new Hitler Administration in exchange for private church perks and privileges.

The German Concordat and the Lateran Treaty gave legitimacy to Italian and German Fascism by the Catholic Church for the sake of the private political agenda of the global Catholic Church.  Many say these two treaties are the basis, remote enabling factor, of the 50 million deaths in World War Two including the estimated six to twelve million victims of the German Concentration Camp Archipelago.

During World War II, Cicognani expressed reservations about Zionism. In a letter dated June 22, 1943 to American representative (to the Vatican)  Myron C. Taylor, he said: "It is true that at one time Palestine was inhabited by the Hebrew Race, but there is no axiom in history to substantiate the necessity of a people returning to a country they left nineteen centuries before …… If a 'Hebrew Home' is desired, it would not be too difficult to find a more fitting territory than Palestine. With an increase in the Jewish population there, grave, new international problems would arise.”

The fact that a Papal Nuncio was the spark to an internal secular matter regarding the movie industry controlled largely by banks and Jewish CEOs and managers makes me think that in the early thirties the RCC could do favors for Italian government and German government power agendas courtesy of an accommodating pope.

After more than three years of unholy and unwholesome screen fare, Catholics formed an organization to beat back the plague. Its official name was the National Legion of Decency—morally upright Protestants and Jews might enlist as well—but the group was known as the Legion of Decency or, more ominously, simply “the Legion.” 

A notion that had percolated in Catholic circles for years, the Legion took formal shape in October to November 1933, after Archbishop Amleto Giovanni Cicognani (American Papal Nuncio), speaking at the National Conference of Catholic Charities in New York on the authority of Pope Pius XI, denounced “the incalculable influence for evil” exerted by the motion picture screen. 

“Catholics are called by God, the Pope, the bishops, and the priests to a united front and vigorous campaign for the purification of the cinema, which has become a deadly menace to morals,” said the bishop. Within a matter of weeks, the Legion of Decency congealed into the most feared of all the private protest groups bedeviling Hollywood. 

Backed by a coordinated network of Catholic weeklies whose front-page headlines, editorial broadsides, and scare-mongering cartoons fueled parishioner outrage, the Legion lanced Hollywood’s hide with pitiless zeal. It had numbers, focus, energy—and a blunt instrument. “Worn out by promises, tricked by pledges, deceived by codes, and dismayed by filth, the Church has finally decided to take action in the one way left for it—boycott,” warned Chicago’s Catholic weekly, the New World. 

The Legion was as good as its word, and it put its word into writing with a brilliant tactical device, the Legion pledge. A prayer-like pact, the Legion pledge was a contractual avowal signed by parishioners and recited in unison at Sunday masses, Knights of Columbus meetings, Ladies Sodalities gatherings, and parochial school assemblies. 

“I condemn absolutely those debauching motion pictures which, with other degrading agencies, are corrupting public morals and promoting a sex mania in our land,” affirmed the pledger. “Considering these evils, I hereby promise to remain away from all motion pictures except those which do not offend decency and Christian morality.”

The picture at the top of the page is the Papal Embassy in Washington DC, home of the current Papal Nuncio / Embassador Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò who you might remember is persona non grata these days in the Vatican and the basis of a great deal of dissent within the Vatican Curia regarding the dictatorial and extremely corrupt Bertone/Ratzinger administration, framed in the media under the title "Vatileaks".  

Which means the control from Rome no longer filters through a papal embassy but rather directly to the papal foot soldiers of the USCCB ready to take away our secular civil liberties through fascist propaganda “religious liberty” PR campaigns and such.

While I do not think that the RCC will ever have the dictatorial powers of a Cardinal Dougherty to attack the “Jews in Hollywood” like the 1930s, the RCC Rome can send millions of dollars into PACs and try and manipulate the American Election in 2012 via bishop/cardinal puppets, Dolan etc. following allegiance not to the United States but the King of Rome, Benedict XVI.

Cicognani BTW was American Papal Nuncio for twenty five years. He was instrumental in helping my cousin, his one time protégé, to carve out five counties of the Philadelphia Archdiocese into the new duchy diocese of Allentown Pennsylvania.  

The Allentown Diocese was a consolation prize for my cousin for not getting the Cardinal’s chair in Philly.  (Or so the family oral history states.)  That Philly chair in terms of papal and American politics got taken away from the traditional Irish American holder of said territory in favor of a new ethnic/economic center of power in America, perhaps negotiated by a Papal Nuncio, in the form of the Polish American future king/pope maker, John Krol.

Vatican Goes To Fox News For Media Salvation

In the middle of media disaster after disaster at the Vatican and all the stabbings in the each others' backs and power plays in Benedict XVI’s brief corrupt rule, apparently it’s Timmy Dolan to the rescue with a recommendation from Knight of Malta Rupert Murdock’s FOX NEWS.

Greg Burkes, who has done no real reporting except as the FOX NEWS Vatican correspondent in the past decade, is a member of Opus Dei.  That means he flagellates himself regularly for spirituality and has trouble dealing with the opposite sex.

All in all, your typical well rounded two dimensional cardboard FOX journalist.

ROME -- In an effort to shore up its communications strategy amid a widening leaks scandal in a troubled papacy, the Vatican has hired the Fox News correspondent in Rome as a senior communications adviser. 

The correspondent, Greg Burke, 52, who has covered the Vatican for Fox since 2001, will leave the network to help improve and coordinate the Vatican's various communications operations, Mr. Burke and the Vatican spokesman said. 

Some Vatican watchers called the move a power play by media-savvy Americans -- including Cardinal Timothy M. Dolan, the archbishop of New York and the president of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops -- inside a Vatican hierarchy run by Italians whose most frequent communications strategy is to accuse their critics of defamation. 

Mr. Burke is a member of the conservative Opus Dei movement, and his hiring underscores the group's role in the Vatican.

As far as I can see he is not a nephew of Cardinal Raymond Burke.  He is more like a temporary consultant like Gotti Tedeschi was at the Vatican Bank.

The insiders in the Vatican will have Greg Burke for lunch. LOL

If anything, all future media press releases supposedly coming from the Vatican will likely originate in Roger Ailes' bunker (he's afraid of colored folks and gays) at 49th Street and Sixth Avenue in New York City, FOX NEWS HQ.

Vatican Bank IOR Under Investigation as Mafia Front for Money Laundering

The Vatican Bank is under media fire as reports emerge that Italian prosecutors suspect it of laundering Sicilian mafia bosses’ riches. 

The Institute for Works of Religion, commonly known as the Vatican Bank, has so far refused to disclose details of an account held by a priest in connection with a money laundering and fraud investigation. 

Father Ninni Treppiedi was sacked from serving as a priest after a series of church funds transactions made by his parish came to anti-mafia prosecutors’ attention this spring. The dealings, involving millions of euro, date back to 2007-2009. 

Prosecutors suspect Treppiedi was involved in money-laundering operations linked to Matteo Messina Denaro, a Mafia Godfather on the run. The cleric’s former post in Aclamo, near Trapani, is said to be the richest parish in the Mafia stronghold of Sicily. 

Trapani prosecutor Marcello Viola made the request to disclose Treppiedi’s account details over six weeks ago. But the Vatican, though confirming the request has been received, maintains the issue is not mafia-related.…The first reports on the scandal emerged in the Italian media two weeks after the head of the Vatican Bank, Ettore Gotti Tedeschi, was ousted after receiving a unanimous vote of no-confidence from bank overseers.

The banker is under investigation for another case of alleged money laundering. But there is speculation that the actual reason behind the no-confidence vote is that Tedeschi was aware of possible mafia links and leaked names and accounts details to police.

It is amazing to see the proliferation of Catholic Cults within the Pagan Catholic Sect of Christianity.

Everybody and his brother (not sister) is vying for a piece of the power pie and gelt in establishing little fascist cults demanding obedience to a leader and belief in medieval Pagan Catholocism.  


The difference between Catholicism and Protestantism these days would seem to be that Catholics have faith in things, objects, leaders, while Protestants spend a great deal more time with moral concepts and the teachings of Jesus as a means to live life and communicate with the Creator.

BTW, the Lay women, not nuns, and the arrested papal Butler Paolo Gabriele, all part of the inner sactum of Benedict’s private papal apartment world are members of the Communion and Liberation cult – Moonies by any other name.

One has to remember the Rockstar with his fawning masses of media groupies all trying to photograph him and write stories of the Great Helmsman steering a PC course against the Evil Soviet Union in that insane invented neo-con era of the “cold war”.

But what the majority of the People of God, the Church sees now is a neo-con seizure of that present Church of theology and assets and in direct reversal of Vatican II in General Wojtyla's “Reform of the Reform” and the present retreat into Medievalism under JPII and his fellow, former Nazi sympathizer successor Benedict XVI.

In the matter of the KGB assassination attempt on JPII because of his full swing and cooperation with the West and the CIA war on Moscow, his place in history is held together with paper, glue and Public Relations pubic hair. Nobody got a promotion to Bishop in cold war Poland without cooperating with the KGB - a fact of life. That and the present junta in power in Vatican City, stabbing all good men and women of faith in the back, as the last of the Vatican gold is shipped to Beijing for investment in Chinese slave factories.

The current Vatican meltdown has Secretary of State Bertone doing all in his power to rig the next papal election with the elevation of many to cardinal status, bought votes similar to those of mediocre cookie cutter minded stooges like American Cardinals Dolan and Burke, for a hand selected Neo-Con successor in the very near future.

One seems to forget John Paul’s invitation to Britain at the behest of the fascist minded Margaret Thatcher Government in May 1982 only to have John Paul II fly over to the fascist Junta in Argentina to give succor to fellow fascists and pretend to be a peace maker in the Falklands War.

I am reminded on how what a total creep and massive personal friend John Paul II was of the Pedophile King Father Marcial Maciel of the Legion of Christ anti-human cult within the RCC sect of Christianity.  The Pedophile King could not be $topped by John Paul II, would not be stopped when the bottom line spreadsheet had impressive  numbers of seminarians in makeshift seminaries in the third world filling up with the poor looking for lifetime meal ticket “celibate” employment (quantity, not quality). This meant more for personal power and prestige than that of the true Spirit of the Church.

That the bottom line for the sacking of Bishop Bill Morris of Toowoomba in Australia was his willingness to hand over a sex abuse case involving a Catholic school teacher over to the cops. Something no American bishop and any RC bishop worldwide seems capable of doing.

That if anything is evident in the present Vatileaks scandal of the Ratzinger/Bertone Regime is that money, greed, embezzlement, bribery, blackmail and oral and anal sex among celibate seminarians, priests and bishops is the only way to get a head in the Vatican Whore House of politics. It is not what you know - it is who you blow - it would seem to be in papal politics these days

The third document is a letter to Bertone from Cardinal Raymond Leo Burke, an American who is head of the Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signatura — in essence, the Vatican's chief justice. It is marked "highly confidential" and registers Burke's dismay that Benedict had approved the liturgy of a controversial lay group known as the NeoCatechumenal Way, which its critics contend violates the prescribed protocol for the Catholic Mass. "I believe that approval of such liturgical innovations ... does not seem consistent with the liturgical teachings of the Pope," Burke wrote.

(Reuters) - The Vatican's justice system harks back to medieval times and is unlikely to provide the pope's butler with fair treatment after his arrest for leaking confidential documents, according to a French lawyer involved in a previous case in the Holy See. Luc Brossollet is not involved in the so-called "Vatileaks" case shaking the papacy but he said his personal experience suggested the Vatican's judiciary is under the thumb of the Holy See and allows scant regard for the rights of defendants.

Brossollet was lawyer for the mother of Cedric Tornay, a young soldier in the Swiss Guard, the Pope's personal protection unit, who was found dead in May 1998 in a Vatican apartment alongside the bodies of the corp's commander and his wife.

"The Vatican does not have a modern, democratic judicial system that guarantees the defendant's rights. We are back to the Middle Ages. Even the Inquisition had some rules, but they don't have any. They just do as they wish," Brossollet told Reuters by telephone from Paris.

"The Vatican promotes the respect of human rights anywhere in the world, but it does not adhere to the same principles in its own courtyard," he said. "I think that poor butler is being detained arbitrarily."…

"I doubt that the butler's defense lawyer will ever have access to the full documents in the case," Brossollet said, adding that Tornay's mother still had not been able to obtain access to her son's judicial files after 14 years.

Brossollet said that throughout the Swiss Guard case, he and his co-defender Jacques Verges - whose clients have included a Nazi war criminal and a Khmer Rouge leader - were refused permission to argue their case before Vatican officials.

Only a handful of lawyers are allowed to work in the Vatican, and those who are not on that list must win special approval to do so.

"There is no independence, no separation of powers, and the judiciary will never go against the wishes of the Holy See. It's the archaic, unaccountable system of a sovereign prince," Brossollet said.

The Vatican has long been said by those who know it to be a nest of vipers. But, recently, the poison has been laid bare for everyone to see as leak after an embarrassing leak has revealed an institution at war with itself.

Already this year we've read about documents warning of a death threat against the Pope, widespread nepotism and corruption, exiled whistleblowers, gay smear campaigns and embarrassing revelations about the Vatican's tax affairs….

Another Vatican watcher, Robert Mickens of The Tablet, has a simpler take the Holy See's woes: "It's arrogance. The people in charge still think the Vatican is above ordinary laws."

Observers also point to the Vatican's decision to censure nuns in the US for daring to "disagree with or challenge positions taken by the bishops" on key social issues.

"All these things are symptoms of a bigger problem. The structure of the Vatican - which is an absolute monarchy - is no longer suitable for the modern world," says Mickens….

The Pope's overtures to the extremist and anti-Semitic Society of Saint Pius X's, with which he shares a love of traditional Catholic Mass, is thought to have angered many Church figures….
