Empires Crash and Burn After They Rise

A great deal of main stream history is about the rise of empires. Much about the fall of empires is usually related to the Roman Empire.  A little about the Persian Empire, the Mongolian empire is also out there on so called history cable channels.

But speaking mainly about History type channels that talk about the American Revolution and the Civil War and World Wars One and Two are all about how we won. It is so easy in retrospect and in the comfort of an armchair to plot the strategies of success in hindsight. 

Those strategies in many cases were trial and error and paid for in blood and suffering by those directly involved as in an army or a navy or collateral damage as in civilian casualties and death. 

It is funny how a military word like Collateral has worked its way into our lexicon in recent years, with our military involvement overseas in rotting sand piles parked over vast reservoirs of petroleum etc.

Some places like Syria for example has fallen apart because of its location next to falling apart government and geography in Iraq, Afghanistan etc. There is also the falling apart of places like the smaller countries on the rim of the Saudi Peninsula where religion mixed with politics is all there is or has ever been since the Prophet Mohammed found the glue to bring some of the warring parties and tribes together temporarily and centuries ago.  

Syria has no oil and many are saying that the population fell apart over hunger caused by the mythical Global Climate Change denied by the Right wing pols.

On a tangent, the Islamic world has different and or subtle-ly different ideas of the sacred and the profane. A mosque is a place of prayer and not a temple filled with relics and statues as in Christianity and Hinduism. The building is used as a public place when not in use for prayer.  This in not unlike the early use of Churches setting up in the corners of Roman basilicas which were originally covered markets to conduct commerce or court business out of the elements like rain or snow.

I saw in the news recently that the Saudi government in charge of Mecca was going to move the Tomb of the Prophet to accommodate a larger space for tourists to parade around the Kaaba. Nothing sacred in a tomb in the founder of a world religion?

Anyway, watching one of these pseudo history channels, they were throwing in a search for the real Mount Sinai trying to prove that the bible is correct in that there really was a Mt. Sinai etc. And then it hits me how the Christians have to agree with the Jews on their history in order to shore up Christian mythology. 

But the real crux of a religion history archeological type programming on a military history channel also goes to prove that Israel has the right to exist based on the man-made myths in the Hebrew – Greek Book aka the Bible.

When following Moses setting up his empire and taking the land away from the natives by force and blood it was because his desert god told him to do it. Whatever.

Nobody ever mentions that ancient Israel as a political entity crashed and burned and was a failed almost extinct religion by the time that the emperor god Constantine or one of his committees resurrected the party line of the old religion to prop up another new designer religion based on one of the later prophets called Jesus who may or may not have existed around the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 C.E..

Same thing with the History Channel constantly churning out WWII footage about how great and smart and powerful we (USA) were in defeating the Axis Powers. The obsession though I think in all this WWII history stuff now that 95% WWII veterans are dead is to show how to start an empire like Hitler. How easy it is to lie and destroy and hurt and kill 50 million people who directly and immediately indirectly died making his egotistical idea and dream building a temporary political reality. He coulda been a contender – woulda, coulda, shoulda.

Now where did he go wrong is a very real theme of these shows shown on cable channels owned by strange dark right wing billionaires who want their own little strange dark empires which they are a building at the expense of the greater good of all the people in a democracy?

Just saying. That obsession with the building of empires does not prevent them from eventually falling slowly or crashing and burning in plain sight for all to see.  I prefer the crash and burn method of downward spiral for tin plated political and financial gods who have no life outside of their selfish dreams and obsession and mental disorders such as Narcissism etc.

When my memory was better, I think I was a bit too obsessed with the buggers that run the Catholic Church in Rome and America. I see from reading an old blog that was above my pay grade not in intelligence but in evolved personal belief that hit me with a hard realization that I did not belong there, while being hit also with the fact that the old boys of the RC church that would rather protect a bugger priest / nun than send him or her off to jail for abusing children, that the old “Religious Freedom”, “Religious Liberty” good ‘ole boys  of the American RC hierarchy are meeting, have been meeting, for a drinking fest in honor of one of the Founding Fathers – of Benjamin Franklin, networking, drunking it up, whoring it up in imitation of the “HellFire Club” from his days as unofficial American ambassador to the Court of Saint James in England in the eighteenth century.

That Cardinal Chaput of Philadelphia was a founding father of this RC Hellfire Club in Napa Valley – wine country in California – “The Napa Institute” was founded for the extreme uber-nazi-like wing of American RC Hierarchs to sit around and bitch about how Clergy don’t get any respect anymore – just like Rodney Dangerfield. At least with old Rodney there was punch line and a giggle. But these guys get together to swill Speaker Paul Ryan’s (a good “catolick” btw) private stock of $350 a bottle Lobbyist vino. 

That and celebrating Latin Masses in “Catacombs” (tunnels / wine cellars) and dealing in innocent prepubescent games of “grab ass” with or sans the tighty whiteys just like the good old days of Friday nights after five in the seminary. Wink. Nod. Gotcha!

I am really getting tired that the national psyche has to adjust itself everytime some sissy Confederate(s) in Rebel State(s) is having a hissy fit or a presidential assassination or mass murder / domestic Terror situation - we, the rest of us, have to adjust and or be reeducated by the Media (Little Mao’s Red Book?) every time Nat Turner’s ugly, not lazy, black ghost rears its head in the form of verboten phrases like “Nat Turner Lives”, Black (Armed) Panthers, or BLACK LIVES MATTER. (Blue Lies Matter phrase all locked up on Twitter for some reason, some freedom in the “land of free speech” btw)

They killed Kennedy in Dallas near my birthday in 1963. I say they because only an idiot can believe that one lone patsy part-time C IA operative e like Lee Harvey Oswald with a $12 war surplus mail-order rifle could serve up Annie Oakley miracle shooting style perfection in the execution of the Yankee Catholic President stupid enough to take secret service advice to roll around Dallas town in corrupt Texas in an open convertible.

I have to wonder what happened to the three people they picked up as suspects in the Cop Killings the other day in Dallas??? The "Spare" suspects ready to be served up to the public. 

I do not celebrate the death of any cop or any civilian innocent of any crime or just standing around on a balmy summer’s eve watching and or protecting the public’s right to peaceably to assemble and protest the militarization of our domestic police forces still being - using occupying Armies Tactics as in Iraq and Afghanistan in a city near you etc.

But hey. The suspect they had cornered, had bombs (or so he was quoted as saying) or so they said – They – the echo chamber media – that you cannot wait out, starve out a suspect – overtime – change of shift due etc. – global spreadsheet considerations – in the solving of any business problem just like the police business of late in the United States. Bottom line manager. Bottom Line Matters or no bonus!

So why not serve up Habeas Corpus to the screaming slave, former slave(?) with the recommended for slave owners NRA (endorsed only for whites btw) weapon of choice WMD - an armed, not unarmed god forbid ROBOT / GROUND DRONE – why not - not serve up Habeas Corpus for a hostage situation that ends not like any I have heard of before.

But is RoboCop the new judge, jury along with being the arresting officer in any incident including bringing the bomb squad and or the bomb drone in for mass murder / hostage situations and or broken tail lights on colored people’s automobiles?

Day of Rage in Tucson Arizona 2011 - Revisited

I lived and worked in Tucson Arizona for close to eight years back in the 1990s. I worked for a short time, 100 yards down the road from the recent mass murders there that involved the shooting of U.S. Representative Gabrielle Giffords of the U.S. Congress.

As stated I worked down the road from the Safeway and its parking lot, the scene of this recent American-style tragedy. I even ate lunch a few times in a food court setting in the front of the supermarket way back when. 

I researched this matter of the shootings that took the life of a nine year old girl among others. The date is January 8, 2011. Seems like two months ago instead of one month to me. Time seems to be compressed sometimes concerning memory. 

I had written an account of the attack on Rep. Giffords Tucson office at the end of the debate and vote on Health Care Reform last year. The attack in the middle of the night and broken glass brought to mind the terrible tragedy of Kristallnacht in Nazi controlled Germany in November 1938 against Jews in the population. I made reference to that event because Ms. Giffords is Jewish.

The apparently troubled young man who did the shootings and these murders seems to have bought into a uniquely American style of settling arguments or supplementing mental disorders with guns. 

Because I had been in this place in Tucson and knew its layout I did not write anything or comment until now. I felt the tragedy in a personal sense having a shared experience of the geography with the victims. I should also note that it took me five years to finally write down my experiences of the 911 tragedy here in NYC. 

No Guarantee of Tomorrow

I also wanted to turn a corner in this blog whereby I did not want to poll parrot the party line coming out of the media. The media turns on cable and cable turns on the middle class who can afford it. The media rightly or wrongly from left or from right seems to feed on the energy of rage both in content and filler. I need to and we all need to as well step back from the edge of that rage that permeates our complex modern society. 

Rage is not only a middle class thing but perhaps a middle aged thing. It comes from the disappointment from expectations not fulfilled. It comes from recognizing the disappointment from the perspective of age and or wisdom from life experience. 

I do not want to merely echo the media and its sounds of fury. 

Now a month later I can look and see how death by random acts of violence is fed by rage and guns. 

I do not object to hunters having rifles in their homes with or without permits. I do object to weapons of war with high capacity discharge being sold in America. They are not necessary in a civilized society. 

I think that licensing handguns within the confines of city limits is the right of the well being of the population of that densely populated city to assure protection from violence and violent mental illness spilling into the streets and onto the parking lots of America. 

I am not advocating repeal of the second amendment’s right to bear arms. I am trying to find common grounds with all parties to seek a solution to too much gun power in America and to too many guns. 

The days of the wilderness are long gone. The days of conflict with the native Indian population are long gone. In the twenty first century, a fetish for guns and gun power is a bit outdated and obsessive. It speaks of the breakdown of community and loss of civility in our society. 

The gun lobby and the media lobby both seem to be catering to keeping the rage up to sell their products. Whatever. 

I am glad that Representative Giffords survived and may well have a normal life returned to her after much therapy. 

Prayers for the victims and their families in Tucson. Prayers for the perpetrators, both the lobbyists of hate and rage, as well as for the disturbed young man who committed this crime.

Found an image of my uncle by marriage to my mother’s only sister - his gravesite – NW of Knox Pa – near the state teachers college in Clarion off of I-80. I guess my aunt is buried closer to home where she was in elderly housing in Shamokin as of a few years ago -  where my first cousin still lives with his second wife – have not spoken to cousin for years btw – that except for one letter from me to him after my aunt died. 

Uncle ---- died of lung cancer and was cremated.  Since the Government was picking up much of the tab including the burial marker because he was a Vet, my aunt buried his urn in a local cemetery, the Starr Cemetery, a secular graveyard with a few hundred graves.  The oldest stone is from the thirties, Michael and Martha Starr.

I relate all this to you because of your interest in Genealogy and grave yards etc. I visited this cemetery on a cold winter’s day in maybe Jan. or Feb. 1983, along with, alone with my cousin’s first wife; my cousin was in the hospital with an Asthma attack that weekend (marital stress?). I drove from New York to pay my respects to my aunt etc. that one weekend I could get away from my job.  Cold as the Artic and windy-yy.

I looked on the Google aerial map and I think they have since cut down part of the forest that then surrounded this very small cemetery.  It was the strangest place I ever visited to date. The forest, the gloom, cloudy, sunny, cloudy sunny etc. place. A view for dozens of miles in some directions with breaks in the tree line. A high place. It felt like I was on top of a mountain.  I paid my respects and we were leaving to go back to the car.

It was then that I heard it. I turned and the sound disappeared. Must have been the wind. I turned my head again and heard it again and louder. It was not the wind. As I turned, the sound disappeared. What I heard was the sound of a woman, the sound close to the ground, the sound of a woman weeping and it had a muffled quality as if coming from the other side of a door. I asked my cousin’s wife if she heard it. I described it to her. She did not hear it; had not heard it. Haunted?
