A Comment Re: Archbishop Chaput on his Efforts to Suppress Child Abuse Reform in Harrisburg (Comment in NCR)

It becomes more difficult with each passing day
here in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia to remain civil and respectful
in one’s comments regarding the local RCC leadership, their statements,
conduct and decision-making, past and present, relative to the abuse,
destruction and devastation visited on child and young adult clergy
abuse victims. Deliberate and deceitful obfuscation and
hypocrisy……..Chaput asks “what more do they want us to do?”
He’s a learned, mature and educated man and he most assuredly “knows”
what must be done to protect our children now and in the future. He
also “knows” what must be done in Harrisburg to give past victims a
voice, legal access and redress (ALL CHILD VICTIMS here in the
Commonwealth of PA, regardless of the venue of the alleged
abuse…..public or private, religious or secular, in the home or in the
community). It doesn’t work, it doesn’t sell, and it is unconvincing when a
man such as Charles Chaput feigns ignorance on what steps needed to be
taken to address the protection of ALL of our children.
He has NO RIGHT to stand in the way of the protection of other
children in the Commonwealth of PA even if he wishes to defend his
institution, leadership and its finances from legitimate legal action
from victims and families that have suffered so terribly. Get out of
Harrisburg, get out of Marsico’s office and LET THE PEOPLE have an
opportunity to hear what the legislative proposals are about and what
they can do for our children. How dare you, your leadership or anyone
else, elected in Harrisburg or elsewhere, subvert and/or hijack our
system of representative democracy.
The last several clergy abuse matters under YOUR watch, Archbishop
Chaput, are clearly demonstrative of your style of leadership relative
to the dangers to children in archdiocesan facilities throughout the
region. Very little information re the allegations, risks in place in
parishes for extended periods before notification of parents and
families, and little if any information (facts, details, outcomes)
regarding the disposition of the cases. What more can be done? Such a
statement cannot be from ignorance, that we know. I believe it is from
arrogance and a smugness that says “how dare the parishioners here in
Philadelphia question my conduct, decision-making and actions in these
issues?”
It is always appropriate to end a presentation on a positive note and
theme. I want to “thank you” Archbishop Chaput for allowing many, many
people in the region and beyond, both Catholic and non-Catholic, to
come to know and love the special, unique, faithful, prayerful and
compassionate nature of two very remarkable catholic women in this area.
You know who they are; if not, then it is your loss that you do not
know the depth, sincerity and beauty of their commitment to the Catholic
faith. Yes, Archbishop, I am referring to Margie Winters and Andrea
Vettori. I have read several of the statements and letters offered in
the media by these two genuine Catholic women since the Waldron Mercy*
issue in the summertime. I just can’t remember reading any finer
expressions of one’s Catholic faith, commitment, sensitivity, caring and
compassion for those in our community, especially the children. Ms.
Vettori’s letter to Pope Francis should be read by every parishioner in
the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, exemplifying how her faith and love of
Our Lord literally fills her life and the work she does.
Archbishop Chaput, unless you have not noticed yet, you are no longer
in Denver. Citizens in the Delaware Valley, Catholic and non-Catholic,
will never rest until all of our children are protected in the best way
possible from the risks and dangers of sexual predation as well as the
highest level of legal access and redress for those who should be
victimized by such evil and criminal acts. Quite simply, either join us
in these efforts or please, or just get out of the way and stop using
PARISHIONERS’ contributions and donations to fight against the
protection of ALL the children of the Commonwealth of PA.

Hate Is A Commodity Of Morons - George Washington Bridge, A Symbol Of American Freedoms

George Washington Bridge NJ/NY Symbol of American Freedoms

I am not a regular viewer of NCR, National Catholic Reporter, a site independent somewhat of direct Catholic control, a so-called centrist POV but one that tows the party line in most instances. I do hear of articles through blogs that I view.

There was some fuss last week over an article over the death of priest in the past who had tried to minister to the LGBT community over the decades.

It was apparently comments on that article that caused NCR to shut down its comments app because of all the gay hate comments masked in anonymous named trolls.

The priest, a maverick in the AD of Philadelphia, Father Robert Nugent, was remembered in this recent article.

Well worth a read above.

But the real point to me is how the hate and threats and force of the Right is what we all have to fear especially when it shuts down civil discourse and true balanced free speech.

In many ways, the bully ways of the right, whether in shutting down traffic on the George Washington Bridge for vendetta or trolling hate of fellow humanity, Gays, is something we have all reason to be afraid of where all this anger and hate will lead this country to.

We ordered our Web editor to suspend the commenting feature and to hide all previously posted comments because of the malicious, abusive nature of the comments that have bombarded our site in recent days.
Comments will be suspended indefinitely. NCR editors will explore options that will allow commenting to return in a way that respects our writers, the subjects of our stories, and our readers. ,,,

Unfortunately, we have reached a point where the good that an open discussion can do is being outpaced by the damage it can cause when commenters do not respect civil discourse.

Comments that have appeared on the website in recent days have been vile and demeaning. We could no longer support hosting a Web feature that allows such despicable comments to appear, and that is why we ordered the suspension of that feature.

We apologize to anyone who was offended by these appalling comments.

San Francisco Archdiocese Forced to Take Down Symbol of (Hate) Anti-Love from their Facebook Page

As some of you well know, I do not want to comment lately in the ugly atmosphere in which politics is being conducted these days. In fact being attacked by a single troll is one thing for expressing my honest opinion, but they seem to travel around in gangs anymore.

One is reminded, I am reminded of the Germany in the 1930’s with jackbooted thugs wandering the streets, paid for by the rich industrialists, and funds channeled through a stooge political party like that of the Nazi Party.

So I am reluctant to write some of this. But since I have a global audience now and this is a American Secular Humanist diary in this new global culture, I will try to pass along the basics of this news item without getting too involved as being a so-called "Catholic basher" as some have labeled me or any other false identity from people hiding behind Anonymous masks as they spew and protect their right to hate and try to bully me into silence. Etc.

I have mentioned here and there that I do not do electronic petitions, mainly because I do not want my e-mail address sold onto to some spam list as I sign a petition for a good and great sounding thing in our democracy.

So too I try to avoid symbols or as in Facebook, there was a recent rash of the equality symbols used as avatar by many to indicate a position on the civil rights of marriage equality.

All well and good to use such a symbol on a temporary basis like wearing a poppy flower at a veterans parade or waving a small flag at a Memorial Day parade or on the fourth of July.

I suppose making a good symbol and making a good point is enough to demand imitation from the other side in terms of a symbol.

Below are two links that say a great deal and I only have one quote from one commenter that says things much better than myself on the matter.

The headline of Writer Jamie Manson at NCR, National Catholic Reporter, caught my eye as I paged headlines looking for what was new on many subjects in the RCC of late.

The mere title said so much that it drew me in and informed of this new symbolism, symbols being used in ways that might be described as hateful by the hierarchy of the RCC.

I have given up on that hierarchy in ever doing anything useful or mature for the human race.

Their bare faced ignorance of human sexuality on every level tells me that they are children and not adults.

But the powers that be want these ignorant children to lead the masses into further dark age like ignorance.

That a symbol of equality like:

Equality = Love

Turned into some obscure quote from Luke to divide:

Division = Anti-Love

And reminded me of Hate Symbols like this:

Proven Symbol of Hate

That the RCC is now picking biblical quotations out of context like some tent revival fundies to emphasize some political agenda.

"Do you think I came to bring peace on earth? No, I tell you, but division." ~~ Luke 12:51

Everything with the RCC Hi-R-key is an absolute and an eternal and set in stone. Perhaps Division is separation from the past and to create new conversation and new ground to explore and not some street mob symbol trying to separate “us” from “them”.

Nothing there was anti-Catholic, it was anti-hypocrisy. The Catholic Bishops have morphed themselves into an anti-gay hate group, and as such have become political, and must expect to be treated like any other political entity (or hate group). When receiving justified criticism or even denunciations of their hate, suddenly trying to morph back into a religion and claiming that they cannot be criticized because they are "religious leaders," is the height of hypocrisy. And we all know what Jesus had to say about hypocrites... ~~”tomtallis”

Michael “Smithers” Winters – Nat'l Catholic Reporter – Quote of the Day Oct 22 – Re: Election Year Chaput style “Catholic Conscience”

Michael "Smithers" Winters, National Catholic Reporter - Abp. Charles Chaput

"Just remember. When you are on your death bed, the Democratic Party is not going to send someone to be there with you and help you get ready to cross the abyss. And, even if they did send someone, it would not be someone you would want!" I have my areas of disagreement with Archbishop Chaput, but I commend him unreservedly for his repeated insistence that we Catholics put our faith first. And, if we do so, partisans on both sides have plenty to think about.

Chubby Chaser Michael Sean Winters - National Catholic Reporter

"The best thing about the Detroit Tigers is that they have some players who are downright chubby. In this neo-pagan, health-worshipping, fitness-crazed culture, I love watching Prince Fielder carry his substantial self to the plate and then boom a homerun." - Michael Sean Winters, October 19, NCR National Catholic Reporter

LUDICROUS ATTACK ON BISHOP FINN – Catholic League

Researching the timeline of the Vatican Catholic League cover up of Bishop Finn’s crime / protection of Father Ratigan, I ran across this helpful article on the Catholic League web site defending the undeveloped social skills of boys aged 12 who enter junior seminaries and who are supposed to function as full human beings as bishops later on in life. Yeah right.

“…Recently Phyllis Zagano, a contributor to the National Catholic Reporter, wrote an unfair article attacking Bishop Robert Finn of Kansas City-St. Joseph. She compared the situations of Arnold Schwarzenegger, Rep. Anthony Weiner and Dominique Strauss-Kahn with Finn’s failure to move quickly against a problem priest….”

Here it the referred to Phyllis Zagano article:

Thanks for the heads up Bill!
