Day of Rage in Tucson Arizona 2011 - Revisited

(February 7, 2011)

I lived and worked in Tucson Arizona for close to eight years back in the 1990s. I worked for a short time, 100 yards down the road from the recent mass murders there that involved the shooting of U.S. Representative Gabrielle Giffords of the U.S. Congress.

As stated I worked down the road from the Safeway and its parking lot, the scene of this recent American-style tragedy. I even ate lunch a few times in a food court setting in the front of the supermarket way back when.

I researched this matter of the shootings that took the life of a nine year old girl among others. The date is January 8, 2011. Seems like two months ago instead of one month to me. Time seems to be compressed sometimes concerning memory.

I had written an account of the attack on Rep. Giffords Tucson office at the end of the debate and vote on Health Care Reform last year. The attack in the middle of the night and broken glass brought to mind the terrible tragedy of Kristallnacht in Nazi controlled Germany in November 1938 against Jews in the population. I made reference to that event because Ms. Giffords is Jewish.

The apparently troubled young man who did the shootings and these murders seems to have bought into a uniquely American style of settling arguments or supplementing mental disorders with guns.

Because I had been in this place in Tucson and knew its layout I did not write anything or comment until now. I felt the tragedy in a personal sense having a shared experience of the geography with the victims. I should also note that it took me five years to finally write down my experiences of the 911 tragedy here in NYC.

I also wanted to turn a corner in this blog whereby I did not want to poll parrot the party line coming out of the media. The media turns on cable and cable turns on the middle class who can afford it. The media rightly or wrongly from left or from right seems to feed on the energy of rage both in content and filler. I need to and we all need to as well step back from the edge of that rage that permeates our complex modern society.

Rage is not only a middle class thing but perhaps a middle aged thing. It comes from the disappointment from expectations not fulfilled. It comes from recognizing the disappointment from the perspective of age and or wisdom from life experience.

I do not want to merely echo the media and its sounds of fury.

Now a month later I can look and see how death by random acts of violence is fed by rage and guns.

I do not object to hunters having rifles in their homes with or without permits. I do object to weapons of war with high capacity discharge being sold in America. They are not necessary in a civilized society.

I think that licensing handguns within the confines of city limits is the right of the well being of the population of that densely populated city to assure protection from violence and violent mental illness spilling into the streets and onto the parking lots of America.

I am not advocating repeal of the second amendment’s right to bear arms. I am trying to find common grounds with all parties to seek a solution to too much gun power in America and to too many guns.

The days of the wilderness are long gone. The days of conflict with the native Indian population are long gone. In the twenty first century, a fetish for guns and gun power is a bit outdated and obsessive. It speaks of the breakdown of community and loss of civility in our society.

The gun lobby and the media lobby both seem to be catering to keeping the rage up to sell their products. Whatever.

I am glad that Representative Giffords survived and may well have a normal life returned to her after much therapy.

Prayers for the victims and their families in Tucson. Prayers for the perpetrators, both the lobbyists of hate and rage, as well as for the disturbed young man who committed this crime.

Kingdom of Ignorance – 8th Congressional District Arizona – King Trent Franks in Charge

"The Incidence Of Rape Resulting In Pregnancy Are Very Low" – Rep. Trent Franks, Former President of Liberty Petroleum

It brings tears to my eyes to bear witness to the evil ignorance from poverty I have seen in the State of Arizona.

That Senators and Reps there are rarely concerned with what is important to the electorate in their districts.

I have written before about Representative Trent Franks when he was congressman from the Trailer Park concentrated 2nd Congressional district starting in the western burbs of Phoenix and pretty much all the remaining under populated Northwest portion of that bare landscape of a state.

I was a bit totally shocked when I did some research today to see that Trent Franks jumped from the 2nd Congressional District to take over the new gerrymandered 8th Congressional District that once was the realm of Gabby Gifford’s before she became the target quite literally in the cross hairs of tea partiers, tea baggers, like Sarah Palin.

That  Gabby if she never got shot up in a supermarket parking lot would probably not have won reelection in the new 8th district courtesy of the Mormon dominated, official members and fronts, Deseret Arizona state legislature and their redistricting (wink, nod).

Enough to make any decent sane person cry.

Considering Mr. Trents' education and professional front for the LDS types in Arizona, his remarks about rape and pregnancy – consider the source.  Duh!

It is also a strange coincidence that Franks'
Brother, who is now President of Liberty Petroleum that specializes in exploration for oil and gas resources, may now have unlimited congressional help, off the record of course, of the entire Southeast portion of Arizona now under Treat Franks jurisdiction.

And on the international border no less too – OMG!

Tucson, soon to be fracked to death and water reserves flamed up for the greed of a bunch of greedy Neanderthals in Congress! ?

Gabby GIffords to Congress - “Be bold. Be courageous. Support background checks.”

Gabby Giffords returned today to the Safeway parking lot where a gunman shot her through the head two years ago to urge the U.S. Senate to take action on legislation requiring background checks.

Flanked by her husband, retired astronaut Mark Kelly, Giffords delivered a brief message to Congress: “Be bold. Be courageous. Support background checks.”

Giffords, Kelly and several of the other victims and survivors of the Jan. 8, 2011, shooting massacre gathered this afternoon to encourage Arizonans to ask Sens. John McCain and Jeff Flake to support expanding background checks.

The Senate Judiciary Committee is scheduled to mark up a background-check bill tomorrow, but Politico reported this afternoon that a bipartisan effort to craft a bill had fallen apart over differences regarding whether non-licensed sellers would have to records of firearm transactions.

As Giffords and Kelly arrived at the Safeway this morning, they laid a bouquet of white flowers at the memorial for the six people who were killed during the Tucson rampage: 9-year-old Christina-Taylor Green, federal Judge John M. Roll, Giffords aide Gabe Zimmerman and retirees Dorothy Morris, Phyllis Schneck and Dorwan Stoddard.

Kelly, with Giffords by his side, then took to the podium to call on the public to contact McCain and Flake to let them know they should support new laws that would expand background checks to gun sales by unlicensed dealers and to make it easier to block sales to mentally ill people who pose a danger to themselves or others.

Wayne LaPierre’s Family Not Effected by Gun Violence in America? – Gabby Giffords Cares About the American Family

Safeway Parking Lot - N. Oracle and W. Ina Roads, Tucson Arizona

Wayne Lapierre, the gun salesman, apparently lives in a vacuum.

We do not know how Gun Violence affects his family in its everyday reality and function.

The facts of his family, like his religion, are a well-guarded secret. This, even after the NRA making the President’s children the object of criticism of the Gun Lobby via the NRA talking a coded racist message, commercial, about wasted U.S. taxpayers money on protecting “them” from gun violence in the White House.

It is a pity we do not know how Wayne really cares or does not care beyond his saleswoman wife Susan, working on direct salary and or commission for the NRA raising funds for NRA “philanthropy” work?

Gun Sales are good for the Wayne LaPierre family even it is only a husband and wife childless, by choice, marriage?

“This is an important conversation for our children, for our communities, for Democrats and Republicans. Speaking is difficult, but I need to say something important. Violence is a big problem. Too many children are dying; too many children. We must do something. It will be hard, but the time is now. You must act. Be bold. Be courageous. Americans are counting on you. Thank you.” ~~ Former Arizona U.S. Representative Gabrielle Giffords

As you well know I have something of a personal stake, interest, in former Rep. Gabby Gifford, having written a piece a month after her personal tragedy in Tucson alongside the tragedy of others by gun violence and mental illness two years ago.

Gabby Giffords may not have children at the moment, but she, unlike Wayne LaPierre and Company, cares about the well being of the American Family.

Keep up the good work of caring about us little Americans that do not seem to count for much at the NRA.

God bless you Gabby and your husband Mark.
