never get this Monica thing completely out of my mind, and it is subtly

shadow coming into the painting and it does two things. It actually literally

the decades old ban on openly Gays in the Manhattan St Patrick’s day Parade, a

today in favor of diversity and individual freedom.

Sunday with hundreds of participants in an alternative St. Patrick's Day parade
-- one that welcomes lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender groups.
The parade in Queens is called St. Pat's for All. It's an
alternative to the city's centuries-old St. Patrick's Day Parade in Manhattan,
which for years has excluded gay groups….
De Blasio praised the crowd at the alternative parade
for braving the cold and snow.
"That is what pride is all about -- pride in the fact that
in New York City, you can be whoever you are, he said.
The two grand marshals at the 15th annual St. Pat's for All
parade were longtime human rights activist Kerry Kennedy and Tony Award-winning
actor Brian O'Byrne.

What's in a
name? When it comes to how to refer to the extremist group that has terrorized
Syria and northern Iraq and violently imposed a caliphate, a lot.
The Islamic
State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) is a bit of a misnomer, says France, as it lends the imprimatur of Islam to a group
that the vast majority of Muslims finds despicable. "This is a terrorist
group and not a state. I do not recommend using the term Islamic State
because it blurs the lines between Islam, Muslims, and Islamists,"
France's Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said in a statement. "The Arabs call it 'Daesh' and I will be
calling them the 'Daesh cutthroats.'"
The name
Daesh, according to France24, is a "loose acronym" for "Islamic
State of Iraq and the Levant" (al-Dawla al-Islamiya al-Iraq al-Sham). The
name is commonly used by enemies of ISIS, and it also has many negative

The Chicago
police department operates an off-the-books interrogation compound, rendering
Americans unable to be found by family or attorneys while locked inside what
lawyers say is the domestic equivalent of a CIA black site.
The
facility, a nondescript warehouse on Chicago’s west side known as Homan Square,
has long been the scene of secretive work by special police units. Interviews
with local attorneys and one protester who spent the better part of a day
shackled in Homan Square describe operations that deny access to basic
constitutional rights.
Alleged
police practices at Homan Square, according to those familiar with the facility
who spoke out to the Guardian after its investigation into Chicago police
abuse, include:
Keeping
arrestees out of official booking databases.
Beating by
police, resulting in head wounds.
Shackling
for prolonged periods.
Denying
attorneys access to the “secure” facility.
Holding
people without legal counsel for between 12 and 24 hours, including people as
young as 15.
Brian Jacob
Church was taken to Homan Square after police picked him up in 2012 on
terrorism charges he beat at trial. He said police first photographed him for a
biometrics database, took him down a long cinderblock hallway on a second
floor, and handcuffed him to a bench bolted to the floor. He spent the next 17
hours there – approximately, as it was a windowless room and the lights were
kept on overhead – while police attempted an interrogation he described as a
fishing expedition.
Homan Square
struck Church as the police equivalent of a CIA black site. Inside, he saw
“big, big vehicles” that looked to him like the Mine Resistant Ambush Protected
used by US soldiers and marines in Iraq and Afghanistan. When his lawyers were
finally permitted access, Church spoke with them through a 12ft x 12ft metal
cage.

How Poor are the Poor in Rome? – Pope Francis
This is
about a news story ten days old that I just ran into. The pope is on his way to
some parish in Rome. He sees a shanty town and tells his driver to pull over
and visits.
A good story
for a pope dedicated to the poor like Francis of Assisi, his namesake.
While it is
a good old fashioned human interest news story - The pope’s camera is rolling for Vatican
propaganda. And the poor living in this shanty town all seem to have
cell/mobile phones to snap photos of the visiting pope, no doubt e-mailing back
to South America in the Andes where most of these shanty town crowd seem to hail
from.
It is
cynical of me to question – how poor are the poor if the poor can afford cell
phones?
Or are we,
am I just not being 21st century and should accept cell phones as now part
of the human species package?

Egyptian
warplanes struck ISIS targets in Libya on Monday in swift retribution for the
extremists' beheading of a group of Egyptian Christian hostages on a beach,
shown in a grisly online video released hours earlier.
At the same
time, Egypt called for international intervention in Libya against the ISIS.
Loyalists of the Syria and Iraq-based group have risen to dominate several
cities in the chaos-riven North African nation, just across the Mediterranean
Sea from Italy.
After the
release of the beheading video Sunday night, the tiny Christian-majority home
village of more than half of the 21 Egyptians believed killed by the extremists
was gutted by grief. Inside the village church, relatives wept and shouted the
names of the dead in shock.
"What
will be a relief to me is to take a hold of his murderer, tear him apart, eat
up his flesh and liver," said Bushra Fawzi in el-Aour village, as he wept
over the loss of his 22-year-old son Shenouda. "I want his body back. If
they dumped it in the sea, I want it back. If they set fire to it, I want its
dust."
The 21 —
mainly young men from impoverished families — had travelled to Libya for work
and were kidnapped in two groups in December and January from the coastal city
of Sirte. In the video, the group is marched onto what is purported to be a
Libyan beach before masked militants with knives carve off the head of each.
The killing of at least a dozen of them is clearly visible, though it was not
clear from the video whether all 21 hostages were killed.
