Breaks Ranks over Barbarian at the Gates Donald Trump
Trump is unacceptable only because he
is a traitor to conservatism, which he is in some ways although that is hardly
the primary case against him. The more valiant among them take the threat of
Trump seriously and are willing to admit the truth, such as Bret Stephens of
the Wall Street Journal who told Fareed Zakaria over the weekend:
I most certainly will not vote for
Donald Trump. I will vote for the least left wing opponent to Donald Trump and
I will want to make a vote that will make sure he is the biggest loser in
presidential history since Alf Landon or going back further. It’s important
that Donald Trump and what he represents, this “ethnic conservatism or
populism” be so decisively rebuked that the Republican party and Republican
voters will forever learn their lesson that they cannot nominate a man so
manifestly unqualified to be president in any way shape or form…
Except for
his so-called wealth, a rented limo or rented jet with your name on it is not
“wealth”, Donald Trump is an ignoramus about the ability to win and rule in our
democracy and of a global power. I have never heard a president in my lifetime
make a public statement against minorities or immigrants in a negative fashion,
their private beliefs are another matter altogether. The worst America has to
endure is a 4 year Hillary term. If she can’t hack it, a strong Republican can
defeat her in 2020. The least three out of the last four GOP Prez candidates,
Romney, McCain, and Dole were more than adequate to do the job. The main
reservation I always had about Bush in 2000 was the fact that a Texas governor
is little more than a ceremonial job with the Texas Legislature only meeting
for 90 days every two years. But Bush had his father’s cronies to fall back on
which he did and without much vetting I must say in the case of Cheney.
