Just as Bishop Lahey of Nova Scotia is apologizing in a courtroom, sorry he got caught trying to distribute kiddie porn, just as the most recent Dutch Church sex abuse scandal is breaking loose, Italian Experts (tourist experts?) authenticate the medieval faked relic, The Shroud of Turin, the so-called burial cloth of Christ, just in time for feel good about the church Midnight Mass services on Christmas Eve.  The lie continues one more season in the eight thousand season history of the church of Rome.

It is the twenty first century and people are still clinging to an art fraud from the fourteenth century to stimulate faith. Fraud does not stimulate faith. Fraud stimulates more fraud. 

The cloth, “the Shroud of Turin”, which has a unique image imprinted on it, put there by some lost process, is just one lone survivor of the thriving phony relic business of the middle ages. Enough pieces of the true cross were sold by the church, enough to build apartment buildings along with hundreds of gallons of Christ’s blood, were hallmarks of a corrupt age that preceded the selling of indulgences and the Reformation. 

The Roman church clings to its pagan roots and pagan fascination with superstitions that equal relics with good luck and magic. 

So now after many tests including modern carbon dating and putting the Shroud firmly in the fourteenth century, the RC church is selling the same old shit to inspire faith at a current exhibit in Turin. Shit that inspires faith is superstition or shit faith. 

People, fanatics keep coming up with more bizarre ways that could prove this Bogus Turin cloth to be the actual burial cloth of Jesus of Nazareth. Can I sell you some shares in the Brooklyn Bridge?

The Shroud is a fraud because it conforms to the exact details of the synoptic gospels, written fifty to hundred years after Jesus. Oral history changes over times. The gospels, their alleged facts are there in writing. Logic to me dictates that the oral history of the gospels finally written down would miss details or add them. This cloth does not challenge the established story recreated and finalized decades after the ministry of Jesus. 

Because the Shroud conforms to an image of Jesus with a crown of thorns and a spear wound in his side and other markings on the cloth, that cloth was made to order. Made to order to conform to gospels which if you believe the Jesus Seminar only accurately quote Jesus eighteen percent of the time in those accounts written much later than Jesus’ lifetime. 

If the most important part of the gospels, the words and ideas of Jesus are on shaky grounds, how can anybody believe the stage sets drawn around the words to illustrate the story. 

So if you get an object that conforms to faulty gospels one hundred percent – it is hardly proof but a customized sure hit bogus relic. 

There is some fascinating literature about the Shroud. Most of that has been written in the last forty odd years and concerns the use of analysis and science to disprove this magic cloth possibly originating from the king of all fraud – Satan.

MacIntryre, who stopped in at the Pictou-Antigonish Regional Library Friday to read from his book, The Bishop's Man, said he decided not to draw attention to lurid acts committed against children, but instead focused on the betrayal of trust and institution's response, or lack of it, when such abuse occurred. 

"The greater crime is an institutional crime," he said. "It's not what an individual does to another person, it is how society or an institution reacts to it. Then I began to look at the book in a totally different way. This is a book about the Bishop's man. It's about somebody." 

MacIntyre, who is a Giller Prize winner and famed CBC journalist for the Fifth Estate, admits he is unsure if the bishop has a "man" that goes into a community and cleans up a situation such as this, but he is confident the dioceses has someone similar in place. He said the bishop's man could be its lawyers, a parish counsel or a priest. 

"Nine times out of ten the Bishop's man came back and said, 'I think he has  a drinking problem. All we got to do is fix the drinking problem and all the other stuff will go way'. So suddenly, buddy is on a plane for Ontario for 40 days of self-examination and than he is brought back good as new and he is in a parish again." 

The institution couldn't face the possibility of a scandal based on the behavior of one priest, he said,  so it had to pretend that there is nothing really wrong with the priest. 

"It's nothing a little rehab won't fix, and at all costs the institution has to be protected. We can't have protestants and Jews, enemies of the church, going around talking about this because they will use it against us and undermining the faith of our own people," he said. 

MacIntyre said this just created a bigger problem because now the person who has been victimized is left feeling like they are worthless. 

"Suddenly everything is rationalized and suddenly little Johnny, who was molested is sitting there wondering where did Father go? He figures out father is down the road and little Johnny figures there must be something wrong with him because Father never got punished. Little Johnny grows up like that and shoots himself or drinks himself half to death and becomes dysfunctional one way or another." 

When the discussion shifted to current events surrounding the recent conviction of Bishop Raymond Lahey on child porn charges, MacIntrye couldn't help, but speculate that the "institution" had a role in transferring him to a new area where his "weaknesses" could be better disguised. 

"My sister is from Newfoundland and she knew Bishop Lahey and she described him as the kind of church leader there should be more of, but he had a demon and the awful thing is he knew about it and other people knew about it for a long time," he said. " I don't know why he came to Nova Scotia, but I can't help but think that it was part of the same pattern. 

He came here because no one knew him. Bishop Lahey had weaknesses and he's facing punishment. It's not going to be very severe, but the end of his life is going to miserable. But what about the people who covered up for him over the years?"

Canadian bishop sentencing hearing begins

“ -- Lahey pleaded guilty in May to importing child pornography in a rare case of a high-ranking Canadian Church official facing charges over sexual misconduct.

He waived his bail and was taken into custody even though he had not been formerly sentenced. His lawyer Michael Edelson had said Lahey wanted to start serving time now to get credit after sentencing.

Lahey is scheduled to return to court in December. His lawyer, Michael Edelson, has asked the judge to reschedule that appearance for an earlier date.

At the time of his guilty plea, the Vatican said the church would impose its own disciplinary or penal measures, but it did not elaborate on what punishment Lahey could face. Prelates who sexually abuse minors can be defrocked; lesser punishments include being forbidden from celebrating Mass publicly.

Last year, in the midst of the clerical abuse scandal, the Vatican made acquiring, possessing or distributing child pornography one of the most serious canonical crimes that are handled by the powerful Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.

Lahey was charged in 2009 with possessing and importing child pornography after border agents examined his laptop at an Ontario airport on his return home from London, England.

According to court documents, Lahey became nervous when a border agent asked him if he had a laptop and ordered a second inspection when they discovered his passport contained stamps for Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia and Germany — countries that can be sources of child pornography.

Thompson told the court some content on Lahey's laptop ranked among the worst he has seen in scores of investigations into child pornography allegations.

"They're right up there," he said. "I mean, it doesn't depict infants, but the explicit images of torture are disturbing."--“

Boy! Do they want to forget about this loser Bishop Lahey and his computer full of kiddie porn!

It was amazing how when this story broke how the American Catholic Blogosphere treated Canada as if it was located not in North America but somewhere near Macau. I know Newfoundland and Nova Scotia are a bit off the beaten path but they did not fall off the side of the flat earth lately and land next to Hong Kong.

Oh well, the trial is set to begin April 26, 2011 – YES! – 2011. A very hot RC Catholic potato that nobody with a career or pension to protect wants to touch.

Lahey trial delayed until 2011

OTTAWA - Bishop Raymond Lahey's trial on charges of possessing and importing child pornography has been set for the spring of 2011.

The trial will begin April 26, 2011 and run until May 6, Assistant Crown Attorney David Elhadad said in an interview.

The former bishop of Antigonish, N.S., is not expected to appear in an Ottawa court until his trial starts in more than a year's time.

(I predict here and now that the fix is in. The evidence will get conveniently lost, or corrupted while in storage, in the interim and the good name of Bishop Lahey will be restored in the halls of sweetness and light and purity at the Vatican.)
