Union Block - Offices and Flats - East Main Street - Missoula Weekly Gazette 7 Jan 1891
THE UNION BLOCK - ( I. J. Galbraith, Architect.)
The Union block is being erected jointly by Messts. F. G. Higgins, T. L. Greenough and Wm. H Houston. The building has a frontage of 138 feet by 90 feet deep, and will cost when completed $100,000. The foundation walls are built and building is designed for store roons, offices and flats, the basement front rooms to be used for stores or offices; the first floor for store rooms exclusively. The second story front rooms are in suites of offices, with open plate glass fronts, the large lights being swung on top and bottom pivots. The interior of each block has an open court from second story to roof, with flats of five and six rooms surrounding the courts. The entire front of the building will be of (Chicago) Anderson pressed brick, laid in black cement, with native granite, polished and carved. The front entrance Tower will be supported with Clarks Island granite plinths, carved caps and lintels, carried up prominently and roofed with vitrified tile. The first and second story fronts of stores and offices will be finished in polished white oak. All the store front vestibules and the main entrance entrance vestibule will have floors alternating in black and white marble; the main entrance corridors will be finished in red oak. The building will be fitted with both passenger and freight elevators, and will be fitted up with three separate steam heating plants, lavatory rooms, closets and pantries and electric light. The structure is located on East Main street neatly opposite the Higgins block, and will prove a valuable acquisition to that portion of the city.

America in Distress
The best of us have not been aware for some time that the worst of us had no intention on doing a good job of governance. Easier to loot the treasury than serve the public and or common good. We are at a turning point. The ruling elites in America used to originate on the Mayflower etc. A lot of centers of power dying out and their progeny are not up to the old standard tasks of gentlemenly agreements and status quo. The Bush and Kennedy dynasties come to mind. The front office of the factory acts as if the back office/assembly line/factory shipped overseas still operates as if that factory was still out there in the back of the family property. And like a story from ancient Rome after the fall of the Julio-Claudian dynasty, now maybe a lot of two-bit tin god POTUSes will run the country into further dismay. Rome was a one town kind of empire/civilization. America has too many parts not to survive this current milaise of money thing thinking it can solve everything without humanity and or compassion or looking your neighbor directly in the eyes. We are all connected in both the common species and with the natural environment. Constantine's Byzantium survived a thousand years beyond Rome BTW - a fact often overlooked by the current Western POV. "History has the ability to surprise." The best is yet to come. lol
